Joining the ExSo Lab

Current UIowa undergraduate and graduate students interested in ganing research experience and learning about the many ways the social world around us shapes how people perceive language in the broadest of senses are encouraged to contact Professor Ramos via email ([email protected]) for more information.

  • UIowa offers funding opportunities allowing undergraduate involvement in research to become a paid experience, such as through ICRU Fellowships. Undergraduate students wishing to take advantage of these opportunities should get into contact with Professor Ramos early in the Fall semester to discuss this possibility.
  • Current or incoming graduate students who have interests in particular subjects within the scope of topics covered by the ExSo Lab, or who already have a research topic they wish to investigate, are also encouraged to reach out to Professor Ramos to discuss bringing their ideas to life. Depending on the scope and nature of the project, funding opportunities may be available, such as through Graduate student Small Grants. Other funding opportunities can also be discussed.

Possible research topics may include:

How perceptions and evaluations of accented speech contribute to seeing/treating others differently

How attitudes towards Spanish varieties and their speakers are influenced by circulating ideologies

How processes of racialization through language impact Latinxs (in the U.S. or elsewhere)

How ideas about language and identity influence what listeners expect to hear (and even see)

How social meaning is produced through acts of perception

If any of these topics draw your attention, or you have other topics that fit the aims and scope of the ExSo Lab, or you are just not sure and wish to know more, please reach out to Professor Ramos to find ways to get involved in exciting and innovative research.
